Back in the day, I'm talking waaay back in the day, artists would paint higher class officials and religious figures literally BIGGER than lower class peasants . This was to show authority or "Divine right." As religion slowly parted from government actions, so did this concept divine right.

To follow was the idea of painting your subject or landscape EXACTLY as it looks, as if to make your art as realistic as possible. After World War 1, artists drifted from this precise style and began to add more dream like and abstract qualities to their creations. This is known as surrealism, the idea that art does not have to make sense.
